What crane is right for your job?

The following guide is intended to provide some general information about truck mounted cranes and offer some help for determining what crane is right for your particular application. For a more comprehensive analysis please contact us directly @ 1-888-922-7263.

There are four basic questions that will help determine the appropriate crane for a particular application. The answers to these questions will begin to narrow down the options that are available.

How much do I need to lift?

This is the maximum amount of weight the crane needs to lift. We find many times this number is underestimated. Some things to keep in mind when calculating this figure are:

  • Am I going to be using forks or any other type of attachments to lift my load? If so, the weight of the forks or attachments must be accounted for.

  • Is my load free and clear to be lifted? All cranes are tested and rated to lift their load under perfect conditions off of a clean level surface. When a load is “stuck” in the mud or has other debris on it will affect the capabilities of the crane.

  • How far out do I need lift my load?

This along with the first question are the two most critical questions that need to be asked to help determine the size of crane that will be needed. A crane that has a maximum capacity to lift 1,000 lbs. at 10 feet is significantly different from a crane that has a maximum capacity to lift 1,000 lbs. at 100 feet. It is important to be accurate when determining this as it can have a significant impact on the size and therefore the cost of the crane you will need.

    What am I lifting?

Answering this question will help narrow down the type of crane that will be best suited for each application. Different styles of cranes offer advantage and disadvantages for the types of loads or applications they will be used for. This will also determine what other attachments may be necessary and what type and size of truck body the will be needed.

    What is my budget?

Setting a realistic budget will help determine what size and types of cranes may be possibilities. If the size needed does not fit into the budget, there may be other more affordable options available, such as used cranes, or the customer may have to reexamine their lift requirements.
